Bemotrizinol (BEMT) What This Means for the Future of Sun Protection

Wednesday, August 12, 2026, 3:15 PM – 4:00 PM EDT

The Skin Cancer Foundation applauds the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its decision to approve bemotrizinol (BEMT) for use in the United States. This decision marks an important milestone in sun protection innovation, and we are grateful to the efforts of all involved in this landmark decision.

As we look ahead to a future with more advanced sun protection options, we invite you to join us for an important conversation about what this breakthrough means for public health, skin cancer prevention, and the future of sunscreen in the United States.

The discussion will be moderated by Becky Kamowitz, executive director of The Skin Cancer Foundation and features:

  • Steven Q. Wang, MD, Chair, Photobiology Committee, The Skin Cancer Foundation, Director of Dermatologic Oncology, Chief of Dermatology, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian
  • Carl D’Ruiz, Senior Manager, Advocacy and Business Development, dsm-firmenich Beauty & Care NA

Together, these experts will explore:

  • Why the FDA’s approval of BEMT comes at a pivotal moment, as skin cancer rates continue to rise and sunscreen misinformation is widespread.
  • What BEMT brings to sunscreen formulations and how it can enhance sun safety.
  • How BEMT may help strengthen consumer confidence in sunscreen and support science-based sun safety education.
  • When manufacturers can begin incorporating BEMT into formulations and when consumers can expect to see these products on store shelves.

If you think you’re safe from the sun while indoors, you might want to think again. Most people are surprised to learn that ultraviolet (UV) radiation can penetrate glass windows, damaging your skin — even when you’re inside. If the sun can fade your furniture and rugs, it can harm your skin, too. And over time, that incidental exposure can put you at risk for skin cancer.

Join Elizabeth Buzney, MD for a webinar on this often-overlooked type of sun exposure, as she discusses:

  • The unexpected ways you’re being exposed to UV radiation—without even realizing it
  • Why we’ve updated our Seal of Recommendation criteria for sun protective fabrics
  • Proven strategies to protect your skin from sun exposure everyday
